Salty Girl of the Week: Jazmine Evans

Jazmine Evans from Melfa, Virginia is our Salty Girl of the Week! Jazmine who is only 10 years old is a seasoned fisherwoman! Her favorite boat to fish on is her parent’s 33' Bertram, “White Bite” out of Wachapreague, Virginia. Jazmine’s dad, Wayne runs the boat and her mom, Kate, is the mate. Jazmine’s favorite memory of fishing is when she caught her very first white marlin when she was only 7  years old.

Jazmine also likes to fish with Bobby McGuinness in Golfito, Costa Rica. You can always find Jazmine fishing offshore in the canyons but she also enjoys flounder fishing with her dad on their small boat. Jazmine fishes with her own custom rods with a TLD 25.  Her most unusual catch was a Pacific Jack Crevalle that she caught on April 3, 2010, in Golfito with Bobby McGuinness and his daughter, Jimena, and her family. They were world record fishing and Jazmine got an IGFA world record Pacific Jack Crevalle. (Note: This is Jazmine’s second world record).

Jazmine has a lot of trophies for an array of different fish that she has caught from the Eastern Shore Anglers Club. Her favorite tournament to fish in is the Eastern Shore Marlin Club's Annual Billfish Release tournament every July. She also has wooden citations from the state of Virginia for her fishing achievements. Jazmine has a world record from the IGFA for a 39.12 lb bluefin tuna that she caught on July 10, 2009 and for a 17.0lb Pacific Jack Crevalle that she caught on April 3, 2010. She is waiting to hear back from the IGFA for the 53.4lb bluefin tuna that she caught on July 11, 2010.

Jazmine loves eating lettuce while she is fishing (this is Saltwater Style’s very FIRST lettuce eater for the Salty Girl of the Week! Way to Go Jazmine!) She loves to catch flounder and dolphin and her favorite release fish is White Marlin. Jazmine's tip to share is to have some patience while fishing. She really likes it that everything can change in just one little second!!

Jazmine’s Mom’s Ceviche
Please note that all ingredients are added to balance the amount of fish you are using.

Diced green pepper
Diced red pepper
Diced jalapeno
Bunch of cilantro, chopped
Cubed dolphin
Minced garlic
Salt & Pepper
Lime juice (enough to cover all of the above ingredients. cover and put it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, stirring occasionally. concentrate works fine)
When ready to eat, add some Fresca and stir. (the amount of Fresca that you add, varies on how much you are making. Please adjust the amount of salt and pepper & minced garlic to taste

Ashley is a mom of two beautiful girls and lives in Charleston, South Carolina.  Ashley loves to fish on her 17ft Sea Pro 321 and fishing with Captain Chris Chavis aboard the Finstalker out of Charleston.  You can always find Ashley fishing the Low Country Waters, off the Charleston South Carolina Coast with her Penn Reel.  Her most unusual catch is a Grass Carpe in the Four Hole Swamp in Ridgeville, SC using a 6# test line.  Ashley’s must haves while on a boat are her Costas, Koozie, Blue and White Fishing Lures and her digital camera.  She loves ice cold Bud Light and fresh fruit also!  Her favorite fish to catch and eat are flounder and catfish while her favorite release fish is Red Fish.  Ashley always baits heavy and is patient for the fish to come to her. 

Ashley Mahi Mahi Quesadilla

Cook and shred Mahi; sauté sliced red and green bell peppers along with sliced onions; Combine and add grated Monterey jack cheese to tortilla and juice from a lime. Fold over and heat through.  Serve with black bean and corn salsa and sliced pineapples!  Delish!!!!

You can always find Wendi fishing Fort Peck Lake in North Eastern Montana on her Lund 2075 with a 300 Verado.  Wendi’s favorite fishing memory was the last time she fished with her father in Arizona, at a lake near Scottsdale. They only caught 2 Bluegill but the time spent with her father was priceless.

Her most unusual catch to date is a mussel. They didn’t put up much of a fight for Wendi.  While fishing Wendi never leaves behind her sunscreen and bug spray.  On Fort Peck Lake, the bugs can carry you away!  Her favorite snack on the boat is Pop Tarts!  Her favorite fish to catch and eat is a Walleye while her favorite release fish is carp.  Wendi went to the Boat and Recreation show in Omaha, Nebraska and found a new seasoning made by the Camouflage Chef called Soggy Bottom.  She brushes your fish with olive oil and sprinkle generously with Soggy Bottom on both sides. Then she heats the skillet on medium and then coats with tablespoon olive oil.  The next step is to place fish in skillet and cook 3 to 4 minutes on each side. 

Wendi has won many tournaments including: In 2007, she won 4^th place along with Hayley Herbold at the Women’s Walleye Tournament at Hell Creek (Fort Peck Lake).  In 2009, she won 2^nd place along with JC Taylor at the Fishin for the Cure Tournament at Rock Creek (Fort Peck Lake).  Lastly in 2009, Wendi and Annette Thomas were the only womens team at the Governors’ Cup (at the Dam on Fort Peck Lake).  They ended up winning 8th on the

first day and 2nd place for big Walleye. On the second day they won big Northern and ended up 20th for the tournament.

Salty Girl of the Week:  Jan Abbott

This week’s Salty Girl is Jan Abbott from New Mexico.  Jan grew up fishing for trout in South Dakota with her dad.  Jan’s favorite memory now is when she got the opportunity to take her dad and mom out last year in San Diego harbor and show him how to fish there.  He had never fished in saltwater before and it was extremely rewarding to Jan to be able to teach her dad something new about fishing.  That day, her mom caught more fish then anyone!  Fishing must be in the genes!

Jan’s most unusual catch would have to be her husband, Floyd!  They fished on the same 5 day summer tuna charter for years and years.  As the years went by, they became friends and one thing led to another and now they have been happily married for 5 years.  Matter of fact, to honor this year’s anniversary, they took a short 2 day trip on the Royal Star to celebrate.

In San Diego harbor Jan and her husband spend some of their most relaxing times on their own 17 foot Sea Pro, the “mSea²“, catching and releasing whatever will bite including bass, halibut and sea bass.  They’ve also been active the last 3 years taking the boat out in the harbor and hoop netting for lobster!  It’s exciting because they never know what will pull up in their net (including sharks, sting rays, crabs, sculpin, halibut, and huge snails).  They’ve also had several tug-of-wars with the local sea lions over who gets to keep the trap and its bootie - Jan hasn‘t lost one of those battles yet!

Jan and her husband has fished for halibut and salmon out of Seward, Alaska, fished for tuna from San Diego to Panama, and fished for blue marlin out of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico and Kona, Hawaii.  Jan’s most scenic fishing would have to be either Hawaii or Alaska, but the tiebreaker would go to Hawaii because she doesn‘t like being cold.  If she were forced to choose her favorite place, it would be off Mexico’s Baja coast.  The ocean there is teaming with life, and she never gets tired of watching dolphins by the hundreds bow surf and play, or watching the whales breach.  When the giant Yellowfin Tuna decide to bite on top of that, the scene is utter perfection.  Imagine landing tuna after tuna over 100 pounds til you can’t lift your arms anymore, that is complete contentment for Jan!  Guadalupe Island, off Baja and its Great White sharks makes it one of the top spots for Jan too.  She loves trying to race the tuna to the boat before Whitey can get a mouthful!

Jan’s favorite thing to have on any boat is their son AJ.  He lives, works and will be a sophomore in college in South Dakota, so getting him out on a boat for an extended amount of time is a challenge.  He has gone on their 5 day albacore summer trip for 7 years now, and is eagerly awaiting his first long range trip of 12 days which begins the day after Christmas.  They love sharing their passion for the ocean and fishing with each other!  He plans to be a marine biologist.

Jan loves to fish on the Royal Star out of Sand Diego. She is a 92 foot sportfisher that can hold 24 fishermen, and Jan and her husband spend at least 30 days a year at sea fishing on her.  All 3 captains on the Royal Star are fantastic, but Captain Randy Toussaint is a fish-finding fiend in a class by himself when it comes to finding and boating tuna.  They have fished with him for close to 20 years.  Captain Brian Simms is the most hands-on captain on the deck.  He always seems to know what each angler might need in any given situation and he always keeps everyone laughing. 

 Jan’s favorite charter boat in Kona, Hawaii is the Humdinger captained by Jeff Faye and crewed by Captain Butch Chee.  Even if they get skunked in their quest for tag-and-release blue marlin, who can have a bad day cruising right off the coast of Hawaii?  It’s beautiful.

Jan fishes almost exclusively with Avet Reels (all saltwater styling in purple).  She uses the tiny models in the harbor for bass to her “horses”, a pair of Avet Pro EX 50/2s that are loaded with 100 and 130 pound mono with spectra backing (and beefed up by Cal Sheets of SoCal).  Those 2 reels have caught most of her tuna over 200 pounds and have never missed a step.  Jan’s favorite reel, however, is the Avet HXW 50/2.  It is a comparatively small reel, but can handle incredible drag.  These little reels are like having a winch against whatever is on the other end and she loves them.  Jan loves all of her rods (mostly Calstars) because her husband designed and wrapped her first ones himself - in purple, orange and turquoise.  They are so beautiful and special, each and every one to Jan.

Jan’s favorite jackpot win has to be the one when Jan and her husband both caught 251 pound Yellowfins to tie for first place.  Floyd boated his in about 45 minutes, and it took Jan about an hour to get the fish to gaff.  Jan also had a streak several years back where she won 3 jackpots in a row on the Royal Star (who says women can‘t fish?).  One of those was her biggest Yellowfins to date, 270 pounds.  Jan is still looking for that 300 pound Yellowfin still out there with her name on it!

Jan’s favorite snack on the boat is croutons!  They are the best cure for seasickness and make a great snack.  She also never gets on a boat without ginger tablets, just in case she gets queasy.

Her favorite fish to catch and eat is Bluefin Tuna - raw!  Being a native South Dakota girl, and then moving to SE New Mexico, she thought anyone who ate sashimi was a little off.  But, once she got up the guts to try freshly caught Bluefin sashimi on the boat, she was hooked!  Now she cannot get enough.  Wahoo would rank 2^nd to Jan and they are an awesome fish to catch too.  Jan loves when the bait goes from zero to 50mph on a Wahoo strike and the pandemonium that ensues, especially when several anglers get hooked up at the same time and rooster tails erupt from the lines cutting through the water!  Of course, Albacore Tuna, Dorado and Halibut aren’t half bad either, which all three Jan loves!

Jan’s favorite release fish is marlin.  She loves the adrenalin rush when a fin is spotted cruising through the spread of jigs, and then the heart stopping moment when they hit the bait and run, stripping off line as they go!  Jan loves seeing a huge marlin jumping and tailing out of the water, showing all its power and grace, knowing full well that you are attached to the other end of the line and supposedly in control of the situation.  Her biggest tagged and released blue marlin was a 600 pounder hooked ¼ mile offshore from the Big Island of Hawaii on the Humdinger.  By the time Jan got the Marlin to the boat they had been dragged 5 miles offshore!

Jan’s Tips for Anglers:
    A. Never be afraid to ask questions and learn!
    B.  Look around and observe what the successful anglers of the moment are doing or not doing.
    C.  If nothing is biting, change is your friend.  Change your bait/jig, your depth, your line weight, even your shirt or hat!
    D.  Landing big fish isn’t as much about the raw strength of the angler as much as it is about understanding the physics behind what you are doing, and being in it for the long haul.  Slow and steady wins the battle.
    E.  Find the most joy from being on the water, not from catching fish.

Salty Girl of the Week: Sara Hensley

Salty Girl of the Week:  Sara Hensley

Sara is an avid fishing gal and proud mom from Santee, California.  Sara’s favorite boat to fish on is her Dad’s 2003 Sea Pro.  Her favorite Captain of course is her Dad who introduced her to fishing while she was a child. 

Sara’s favorite place to fish is the Coronado Islands of Mexico.  She lives near San Diego and it's always a nice boat ride out to the Islands.   There she can always find Flying Fish, Porpoises and the occasional Whale! The Islands themselves are easy on the eyes especially after a good year of rain and the tops of all the trees are very green.  

Sara prefers the distance between the reel and the end of the rod to be short.  She has found this to be helpful in keeping the rod closer to her body which puts less stress on her arms when reeling in "The Big Ones".  Sara’s tip for the rest of us is that you don't have to have the most knowledge or the best gear to land a good time keeper, all you need is the desire.

 This season she caught her first Yellowtail.  They have got a lot of fight in them which keep her engaged and excited.  She loves the sound of the line zipping when they start running and that makes any Angler's heart race!  Her favorite fish to eat is a seared Bluefin Tuna!  When Sara goes camping she likes to freshwater fish for Bullhead Catfish.  Bullheads are a neat looking fish but Sara is not to wild about the taste so it’s her favorite release fish.

Sara’s favorite thing to have on the boat is music!  She is a Classic Rock and Blues Gal so it's not unlikely to catch her rocking out to Stevie Nicks, Heart, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Grateful Dead and Taj Mahal in between bites.  She read that a previous SWS Salty Girl of the Week had the same preference when it came to snacks!  Now she wonders how many more ladies out there are fans of Cheez It's!   For Sara - it's all about the Cheddar Jack flavor and she is also hooked on Sun Flower Seeds while fishing.

Sara’s favorite memory of fishing was at Lake Morena in San Diego, CA.  She was fishing with her son Sage, 5 years old at the time when he caught his first fish, a tiny little Bluegill.  The excitement in his face and smile will always be a very priceless precious memory for Sara. 

Sara’s Fish Recipe:

This recipe is for the people that do not like fish and they will ask for seconds.
Ingredients:
-Fish Fillets
-Butter
-Fresh Garlic
-Seasoning
-Lime Juice
-Spicy Brown Mustard
-Grated Parmesan Cheese
-Mayo
-Tabasco Sauce
Directions:
Broil the Fish (whatever fish you prefer) on low with Butter, Garlic, Seasoning and Lime Juice until the bottom half is white.  Mix the Garlic, Seasoning, Spicy Brown Mustard, Tabasco, Mayo and Grated Parmesan Cheese in a bowl.  When the bottom half of the fish is white, coat the top with the mixture.  Put fish back in the broiler and cook until the top is golden brown.  Remove and enjoy!

Salty Girl of the Week: Heather Cirincione

Tampa, Florida’s own Heather Cirincione has so many wonderful memories of fishing. She grew up on the water and was fishing since she was a little baby. She loves being around great friends and her family on the water.
Heather’s favorite boat is her dad’s Grady White. He is her favorite captain! You can always find Heather fishing Boca Grande and Honeymoon Island. Her most unusual catch to date was a turtle and pelican. She loves to catch and release Tarpon because they are a fun fish to catch. She loves to catch and eat yellow tail snapper also. Heather’s favorite thing to bring on the boat is good music along with sunscreen! Her favorite snack aboard is Pretzels (mine too!) and Publix subs. Heather’s favorite way to prepare fish is to use Panko bread crumbs with a light pan fry.
Heather’s tip for all anglers is Patience! It’s a virtue!!

 Salty Girl of the Month - Shauna Tabor

Shauna is a mother of three and wife to her favorite captain, her husband, Captain Pat Tabor.  Since he is a Captain and usually has bookings, she finds a friend or two and fishes for fun.  Shauna is a Texas girl and her favorite place to fish is the Tide Gage inside of the infamous Baffin Bay.  It has a wonderful bottom to wade and is beautiful and fruitful of fish.  Her favorite rod is her blinged out Redtail Rod with her second generation Curado.  Shauna’s favorite snack to have on the boat is Caramel Chex Mix and Arizona Southern Style Tea.

Shauna loves eating and catching trout, especially wade fishing.  She "pets" her trout when she has them on her stringer.  She uses a Honey Hole Stringer manufactured by KaBree Tackle that keeps fish alive longer when wade fishing.  So as they are swimming around her she can reach down and pet them while she waiting for the next bite.

Shauna’s best catch was with her two girlfriends when they were out to pre-fish for a tournament. They had about 45 minutes left to be on the water before they had to get ready for the Captain's meeting.  Shauna decided to fish a shoreline that she has always wanted to but could never get anyone to stop do to so.  The girls and Shauna anchored up and started fishing.  Shauna hooked into a fish that didn't thrash her head around so Shauna thought she just had a nice red on.  The fish got to the boat and her teammate went to net (and missed) and that's when Shauna saw the silver.  She started shaking with excitement.  She netted the second time and got the fish in the boat.  It was a 29 3/4 inch trout.  You would have thought Shauna won the lottery from her hooping and hollering; she called her husband and told him that she got her 30 (that's what she thought it was at the time).  He couldn't understand her to well, so he got scared thinking something was wrong.  And when he did understand what Shauna was telling him, she heard that motor crank up in the background to head back to where she was.  During that time one of her other teammates hooked into a 29 inch red and then a 26 inch red.  Capt. Pat headed back to where they were and anchored beside them and his client's started catching. At the end of the trip Capt. Pat’s clients told him that they wanted to fish with Shauna the next time!  So the conclusion of the story is this: Shauna’s 29 3/4 inch trout is mounted and on her wall, next to her husband's...well he doesn't have a fish on the wall yet.

When she fishes tournaments, she has come to learn that her husband is the best partner.  He knows how she fishes and he is on top of his game.  Capt. Pat and Shauna think alike and they know what needs to be done.  Shauna loves fishing tournaments with her mom.  She will fish just as hard and she is known as their "fish whisper" on the boat.  She can feel where the fish are biting.  She is honored to have her mother fish with her and Shauna thinks her mother is one of the greatest fishing women in the world. 

Shauna’s favorite thing to have on the boat is her girlfriends, which includes her mom and sister.  That is the main reason why she likes fishing women's tournaments.  They allow a captain (which is her husband) so she gets to have fun with her husband, her mom and sister (who are always her teammates and awesome fishing women).  No matter what, you can always hear laughter from their boat.  The fish hard...but they have a blast doing it.  Now that they have put the fever into Shauna’s little sister, they make one heck of a fishing team.  Soon before they know it they will have a bigger fishing team with Shauna’s girls!  Her five year old daughter is a wonderful fishing princess and will grow up to be an avid fishing woman like her mommy and grandmother.  She will bait, cast, set the hook, reel and take her fish off the hook all by herself.  She was two years old when she caught her first keeper all by herself.  Shauna’s 3 year old son just wants to be on the water.  That might be because Shauna fished pregnant with him up until my 9th month (wade fished until I was 8 months).  Shauna’s 11 year old daughter wants to go just to spend the day with her and loves to compete against her. 

Shauna shares with us some great fishing tips from relatives:  When Shauna’s grandfather would go fishing at the coast he would spit on his bait.  Capt. Pat laughs at her, but when Shauna caught her limit of trout, and he wasn't catching at the time, he too started spitting on his bait.  Capt. Pat’s grandmother "Mimi" would hit her shoe on the side of the boat three times if the fish weren't biting.  She says she is calling them up.

Shauna has many awards from fishing tournaments on the Texas Coast.  Her most prestigious award was 1st Place in the Babes on the Bay Tournament.  Shauna is the Director of Saltwater Sweeties, which is a ladies fishing tournament.  The tournament will be held September 10 and 11, 2010.
