Salty Girl of the Month – Taylor Schulze

Salty Girl of the Month – Taylor Schulze

Taylor Schulze from Texas is only 13 and started fishing when she was 2 years old.  She enjoys fishing with her brothers in the tanks & on the river at her grandparent’s house near Rockport, Texas & loves to fish in Baffin Bay.  When she was small she even filled up the bathtub pretending to be fishing and was found sneaking a fishing line into our family’s fish tank.
Taylor’s favorite memories of fishing was when she caught her monster bass and going out on her first tournament with her mom’s fishing team, "Just Hook'n" and winning the Babette division of Babes on Baffin Blue Fishing Tournament.   Her favorite captain is Capt. Chad Verburgt and fishing on the Rockport Redrunner, a Carolina Skiff.  Taylor is always learning something new from Capt. Chad.
Taylor's most unusual catch was when she caught a little puffer fish while her favorite fish to catch and eat is Redfish or a Mangrove Snapper.  Taylor is a strong advocate of releasing fish back into their habitat.  She always is fishing with her lucky reel & Redtail rod with all her crazy fishing buddies. Taylor loves to have Takis (a type of hot chips) on board to munch on and a radio so she can sing along & do her fish dance.
Taylor’s tip for anyone who is starting to fish is to be confident and it's not the amount of fish you catch or the size of the fish, it’s to have fun. Her most important tip, I think we all share is what happens on the boat stays on the boat.  Her most recent award was for the longest fish in the Babes on Baffin Blue Tournament.  She won an award with a custom rod.

Taylor’s favorite fish recipe is her Mom's Avocado Redfish Surprise
2 Avocados
1 redfish on a half shell
1 1/2 Tbs butter
1/2 cup cilantro
Zesty Italian to your tasting
Tony Chachere’s
Dried French's onions
Pepper
On the BBQ pit
And one empty belly!

Salty Girl of the Week - Julie Parker

Salty Girl of the Week:  Julie Parker

Julie has been fishing on the Chesapeake Bay for years!  Julie can always be found fishing on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay on her own boat, The Lexianna which is a custom baybuilt Charter Boat built in Rosehaven, Maryland.  It can accommodate up to 19 anglers.  Julie loves to fish with Captain Dave, her husband!  However Julie has a new love…live lining from her Stand Up Paddleboard!

Fishing has given Julie a bunch of great memories.   Julie and her husband have been teaching local kids about the species of the Chesapeake Bay for over 4 years now. They will take fish that were caught and teach them about the fish and how they can help save their habitats.  Julie loves to share the children’s excitement when the kids tell them about their fishing stories.  Her most memorable time fishing was the first time she took her own daughters fishing. Their faces were priceless when the first fish came over the side!

Julie has a citation for flounder and a few of the Top 10 of the day placements in a local Rod n' Reel tournament. One day she hopes to fish a ladies tournament because she loves to fish with her girlfriends! (JULIE – come to OC during Poor Girls Open Week – you will have a BLAST!)

Julie’s favorite rod/reel has to be her custom pink spinning rod that her daughters had made for her for her birthday. It has a great little Okuma bait runner reel.  Julie’s most unusual catch is a plastic deck chair (that would surprise me too! Lol).  Her favorite things to have on board are good Music, sunshine and great company!  Julie also loves to have beer while fishing and peanut M&M's...they bring her good luck.  Julie’s favorite fish to catch and eat is Rockfish but she loves to eat tuna, but hasn’t had the thrill of catching one yet.   Her favorite release fish is Red Drum.

Julie urges other women to teach your kids to fish and respect the waterways.

Julie’s Salt Crusted Baked Rockfish served with lemon olive oil

    * 1 (3-pound) whole rockfish, scaled, with fins removed
    * Leaves from 2 sprigs fresh rosemary
    * Leaves from 2 sprigs fresh thyme
    * 4 pounds coarse sea salt
    * Water, as needed
    * Freshly ground pepper, as needed
    * Lemon infused olive oil

Directions: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
In a bowl, combine the rosemary, thyme, and salt with enough water to form a paste. Spread a layer of the salt paste, about half of it, on the bottom of a baking dish. Place the fish on top of the salt paste. Carefully spread the remaining salt paste over top of the fish, being careful to cover it completely. Bake fish for 25 minutes.

To Serve: Break the salt crust along the sides. Remove the upper crust from the fish taking care to keep the crust whole. (If you break the upper crust or crack into the fish from the top, the fish will turn out salty.) Gently remove the fillets.

Salty Girl of the Week: Emily Hall from Middleboro, MA

Salty Girl of the Week:  Emily Hall from Middleboro, MA

Emily started her love of fishing last year with the help of her boyfriend, Taylor.  He took Emily out fishing the summer of 2010 and she instantly fell in love with fishing and the boyfriend as well.  Emily’s father has always been an avid fly fisherman and he still can't believe that Emily has the fishing bug.  Emily’s first tuna that she ever caught was a giant Bluefin measuring 74 inches and she was able to sell it.

Emily favorite fishing memory was when she traveled to Cabo San Lucas with her boyfriend's family for vacation last winter.   They went striped marlin fishing and Taylor prepped her on what to do the entire way out there.  They finally hooked one, and they sent Emily to the fighting chair.  Taylor had told Emily that striped marlin fight just like a bass, so she expected it to be easy and in to the boat within a few minutes... 45 minutes later, plus a lot of back pain, and many evil eye shots at Taylor, the fish was finally brought to the boat and ended up being the biggest catch of the trip!  She was excited to see how the marlin lit up next to the boat another great memory of this exciting day for her.

You can always find Emily aboard the Fortuna, out of Scituate Harbor, MA.  Her favorite captain (sorry Taylor) is actually Taylor's father, Greg Sears, known as “Old Greg" to his friends.  He's one of the best fisherman and the finest captains around Massachusetts.   Her favorite snack on the boat is a box of Cheez-its.  It doesn't matter if it's 5:30 in the morning, she’ll still eat them and usually finish the box at some point during the day.  You will always find Emily with her camera while fishing; she is known to get the best pictures of the catches of the day.

Emily’s tip of the week - If you're trolling, make sure you check for weeds on the line!  The fish can see them and this could be a reason why they won't go for it. (Taylor should be so proud)
