This Week's Salty Girl - Harriet Simmons!

Salty Girl of the Week:  Harriet Simmons

Harriet began fishing almost as soon as she could walk. She would fish for bream, through a crack in the dock at her grandparent’s lake house on Kinglsey Lake in Florida.  She didn’t use a rod and reel, just a piece of fishing line with a split-shot sinker, tiny hook and little ball of bread.  Harriet passed this tradition on to her daughters.  She reconnected with a high school flame that loves to fish and introduced her to fishing from a boat, instead of a dock.  Her fiancé is a great teacher and in addition to giving her fishing pointers he has taught her to hunt as well.  Harriet killed her first hog earlier this year.

Harriet’s favorite captain would have to be her fiancé, Eric Durham aboard his Key West.  It’s just right for the inshore fishing that they love to do, although Captain Roger runs a close second.  Harriet’s favorite memory of fishing was when and Eric went out with a local guide, Captain Roger Bump and landed a 70 lb Tarpon in a creek between Jacksonville and Amelia Island.  It was an awesome fight bringing that fish to the boat and created a memory that Harriet will never forget.

Harriet loves to fish in the Florida Keys.  There is such a variety of fish and the water is so beautiful, but since she can only go down there once a year, her 2nd favorite place is a creek that branches off of Sister’s Creek in Jacksonville.  It is full of Red fish, Black Drum, Flounder and Trout.  Harriet’s most unusual catch was a 4 foot long Moray Eel that she caught this past year in the Keys.  It had scary looking teeth and it was probably the ugliest fish that Harriet has ever seen, except for its beautiful metallic green color.  While Tarpon is her favorite release fish, Harriet’s favorite fish to catch and eat is Dolphin.  She caught her first of several dolphin, this year, in the Keys on a charter with Eric.  They actually caught 18 that day, including a 28 lb Bull that she caught using light tackle. 

Harriet never leaves the dock without her camera.  She likes to take pictures of the fish that she catches because it is so exciting for her.  Going from catching little bream through a crack in the dock to catching large fish is an awesome experience for anyone, especially for Harriet.  Harriet also likes to post her catches on Facebook.  Harriet likes to bring aboard Publix Chicken Salad and Beer.  She prefers Budweiser to wash it all down.  And you can always catch her with tortilla chips too to use in place of silverware.  Pretty inventive!

Harriet’s tip to the ladies would be if you want to catch fish, you have to have your line in the water.  Her daughters always get frustrated and say that Harriet catches more fish than they do.  And she does because she always has her line in the water, always!  GET FISHING!

Harriet’s Mahi

Ingredients

Salt

Pepper

Fresh whole Lime

Mahi Mahi Filets

Directions

Season fish with salt and pepper.   Heat skillet over med-high heat.  When skillet is hot, spray with Pam and then immediately place fish in skillet.  Squeeze some lime juice over fish and cook until edges are not opaque.  Flip fish – the lime juice should have formed a dark crust like appearance on the fish. Repeat with lime juice and continue cooking until fish is flaky. 

This is very simple, but oh so tasty!

Saltwater Style’s Salty Girl of the Week – Breanna Jones

Salty Girl of the Week:  Breanna Jones

Breanna of North Fort Myers in Florida started fishing at the age of two!  She keeps a memento newspaper clipping of her & her dad when she won a fishing contest for the smallest fish.  You can always find her on a boat bending a rod. 

Breanna loves fishing in the Keys because of the many possibilities to catch different species.  Breanna’s most unusual catch was caught a few weeks ago.  She caught a 21 inch needle fish on cut ballyhoo.  Her favorite fish to catch and eat is Redfish while her favorite release fish is Tarpon.  She loves the fight of the Tarpon and it’s one of the largest fish that she has landed.   Her favorite memory of fishing was two years when she brought her first tarpon of the season to the boat!

Breanna loves tower boats, but you can always find her on a 21 foot Jupiter Flats Boat.  Her favorite captain is her own boyfriend, who always hands her off rods to land the perfect fish if it’s not already hooked on her own pink mossy oak fishing pole.  Breanna’s must haves on the boat while fishing are her Costa's, a camera, Gardetto's Snack Mix and a couple beers!

Why is Breanna successful at fishing?  She knows that the big fish are there, and she doesn’t get discouraged if she doesn’t see them!  They will come around when she least expects it!

You can also see Breanna in the Florida Sportsman.  She was featured in the past for her Mutton Snapper while she was fishing the Keys.   Way to go Breanna!

Saltwater Style’s Salty Girl of the Week – Nancy Brown

 Nancy loves surf fishing and is always on the hunt for the elusive 50 pound striped bass on Plum Island in Massachusetts.   Nancy has fished as long as she can remember. When she was a young girl she started going with her Dad on deep sea fishing trips.  She spent summers in Duxbury with her family and they would take their Boston Whaler out everyday loading it with flounder. During the 80’s Nancy fished freshwater every day for Large Mouth Bass, catching pickerel, smallies and trout.   Nancy started to seriously fish the salt for striped bass about 15 years ago.

Nancy’s favorite memory was when she was fishing the beginning of a hurricane about 2 years ago.  There were sets of waves reaching 13 or more and reaching 8-10 feet high. Nobody was catching anything and her rod was bent in half. The waves were pushing that fish in at her and she could hardly reel fast enough to keep up. She knew it was a keeper but could not judge how big. It was pitch dark and Nancy felt the fish hit the beach and stop like a freight train.   She could not see what she brought in or move it another inch. Nancy and her husband turned on their lights and the next words out of her husband’s mouth were expletive. He never even knew that Nancy was reeling in a fish and she didn’t think it was a big deal. That fish weighed in at 27.4 pounds 40 inches of beautiful striped bass. That fish won Nancy 3^rd place in that year’s Plum Island Surfcasters Tournament.

Nancy’s most unusual catch was a fluke that she caught from the beach at night. It was dark and she held it up and saw the silhouette. Nancy thought it was a flounder which is not unusual at that specific place but was odd for being caught at night.  When she went to unhook the fish, it bit her and then she knew it was not a flounder.  OUCH!

Nancy’s favorite fish to catch and eat is the Striped Bass, but she loves a good fight with a bluefish.  Twizzlers is her magic MoJo for catching those big stripers.  It’s her number 1 must have!

Why is Nancy successful in fishing?  Nancy reads everything on fishing, she puts her time in and learns to read the water and she knows her target fish.  She also urges everyone to attend seminars and listen carefully to those who are there to guide. The best advice that Nancy wants to share is to have fun and enjoy the wondrous beauty that surrounds you.

Nancy holds a 1^st and 2^nd Place Award for The MBBA Everill MacKay Derby, she won 2nd Place in the Casting Contest for The MBBA-Women’s Spinning, She was on the First Place Team in 2011 for the Plum Island Surfcasters Invitational, Nancy’s won Sportsman of the Year in 2010 from the MBBA and she won 3^rd Place in the Plum Island Surfcaster Year Long Tournament in 2009.

Nancy’s Seafood Casserole

1 # striped bass (give or take some) cut in chunks

1# Sea Scallops

1# Shrimp

1 C. Brown Minute Rice

2 cans Newburg sauce or 2 cans cream of shrimp soup

1 ½ cans milk

1 stick of butter

1 sleeve Ritz Crackers

1 small onion

Layer fish and shellfish in a large foil pan mix soup/sauce with milk until well blended. Pour over seafood.

Saute’ onion in butter until translucent add roughly crushed crackers and a touch of garlic salt and spoon on top of casserole and bake at 350* 45 minutes. to 1 hour. Call in the troops.

Salty Girl of the Week Barbara Reeve Maddox

Salty Girl of the Week Barbara Reeve Maddox.

Our Salty Girl of the Week is Barbara Reeve Maddox from the Florida Keys.   Barbara started fishing in the late '70s when she met her favorite fishing guide and fishing guru, Rob.  Barbara likes to fish on her own Maverick flats boat in West Palm Beach with Rob. While in Marathon she fishes at the reef, bridge or bayside on one of Captain Pip's rental boats (she prefers the 20-ft. Cape Horn).  She likes to fish offshore only if the weather is right. Give her 5-10 knots of wind and Barbara is a happy angler.

Barbara has many fond memories of fishing though one of her favorite memories was fishing off Harbour Island in the Bahamas with their guide, Bonefish Joe Cleare. Her and Rob walked the flats stalking bonefish in a light drizzle. Every few minutes Joe would say in a thick Bahamian accent, "Cast over there ma'am." And Barbara would. Then he'd say, "Expect a hit any minute, ma'am, expect a hit any minute." And darn if he wasn't right, Barbara caught many bonefish that day.

Barbara’s most unusual catch is a moray eel.   As the eel curled itself around her line, Barbara said, "Okay, now what do we do now?”  The Eel must have heard her because he very nicely unhooked himself.  Barbara loves to fish for Grouper and Snapper because they are great to catch and to eat. Barbara likes to relax with a cocktail at Porky's Bayside while having her fresh catch prepared for her after a long, hot day of fishing.

Barbara caught her fish tarpon in May on a fun fishing trip with friends Capt. Chris and Christy Johnson, owners of SeaSquared Charters. Capt. Chris said the fish weighed about 70 pounds and the fight lasted about 20 minutes, but Barbara said it must have been three days.   It was a fish that she was proud to land and even prouder to let swim away.  Tarpon is a truly a majestic and beautiful creature.

The Florida Keys is all about shade. Barbara can't leave the dock without a big hat, polarized sunglasses and sun screen.  Her motto is, if you want to catch a really big fish, leave the camera and gaff on the dock!  Barbara’s favorite snack on the boat is fruit and sandwiches.  There's nothing better than a slice of fresh pineapple or watermelon to wake up your taste buds while you're on the water fishing with Barbara. Also, if the bite is slow, she likes to break out the sandwiches. That will get the reels going.

Barbara is a remarkable lady.  I want to give you a sense of who Barbara really is – a true free spirit upon the water.  This is a direct quote from Barbara.  “It's not about how many fish I catch or how big they are, it's about being on the water, in the present that makes fishing so alluring to me.”
